Breeders Cup Preview

The end of April brings with it the end of a season and that means two things, Breeders Cup and Yearlings!

The qualifiers are all wrapped up and the entrants are just about finalized for the Virtual Breeders Cup Series which will kick off this weekend at 6:00 AM server time.  Every race features a competitive field and some of the juveniles look to really make their mark heading into the three year old campaign.

We are bringing back the $1000 giveaway from now until the beginning of the new season (May 1st). For every $50 deposited you will receive an entry into the pool!  Read More

Senior Breeders Cup Sprint - Details

The very first race of the weekend looks to start things off with a bang as the older horses take the track for a 5 furlong sprint over what is expected to be a fast main track.  The field features the reigning champion of the age group in Bris Star who comes in riding a 7 race win streak.  He will be challenged by a familiar group of horses including Ewing Farm's always dangerous Jackson who is cutting back in distance for this.  Also entered is Anfield Road's four year old son of Storm Cat, Desire who is trying 5f for the first time since late September.

3yr old Breeders Cup Turf Super Sprint- Details

The field for this race comes up a bit light as these six horses see the track for the last time in age restricted company but it is deep with talent.  The field includes last years juvenile breeders cup sprint champion in Unusual Talent.  This Unusual Heat colt leaves his favored distance of 5f to try 3f for the second time in his career.  He managed to win the Albany Stakes but is likely to be up against it as he really prefers a bit more ground.  The likely favorite is Cirrus Des Aigles who has only seen one loss in 7 races under new trainer Nemesis Stud.  I think you also need to keep an eye on another horse that has been neck and neck with these which is Nutty.  If this gelding by Afleet finds a way to improve just a length off his previous performances then you can expect him to hit the board.

Juvenile Breeders Cup Turf Marathon - Details

This race is shaping up to be one of the most fascinating of the races on Saturday.  This race will feature what will likely be a heavily favored Kandari who many believe has a strange hold on the turf division this season.  The huge question mark will be can Nemesis Stud's Kandari get 2 miles (3200m) in a race situation and 10 extra pounds on his back?  I think this is far from a certainty given he was tired coming down the stretch in his 1 3/4 effort back on February 27th where he passed Lady of Avalon late.  Lady of Avalon, recently purchased by Nemesis Stud from Ranch Hamburg , is coming off an impressive front running win on March 27th the last 2 mile qualifier where she defeated Volcanic Eruption by five lengths.  I think this is one race that is setup for a big upset as Kandari is likely being stretched beyond his limits for this one.  He will glady welcome the three year old campaign where he can compete at level weights again.

Juvenile Breeders Cup Classic- Details

We would be remiss to leave out the race that will set the tables for the Virtual Triple Crown series.  This year's crop is a competitive group of mostly fillies that will look to challenge Lanes End Farm's Ride on Curlin who commanded a massive price tag of $710 at auction.  This colt, out of Curlin, has yet to post a big speed rating but has won his last two qualifier by a combined 13 lengths.  This may be his first true test as he will see the best competition to date.  He will face Miss New York, a Bob Baffert trained horse, who has already won nearly $200 and won the traditional prep for the Triple Crown in the KLPatton Stakes.  Nemesis stud brings two very live horses to this race in the form of Trieu Thi Trinh and Artemisia of Caria.  The former was a private purchase for $120 and has more than made up for that tag already.  She looks to be the real deal and has improved every start.  Artemisia of Caria is a maiden but is also following an improving pattern under the training of Nemesis.

Juvenile Breeders Cup Turf Super Sprint- Details

This final will be contested on the turf over 4 furlongs (800m).  It is a nice field of 12 which will head to the post which includes Old Grumps, trained by Anfield Road.  This horse has regressed since going up to 132 lbs and will be the top weight again here, likely limiting his chances but having 3 wins from 7 starts he should not be overlooked.  While Anfield has the field surrounded with his 5 entrants I think that the lone entry from Black Death, a MAIDEN, looms a massive threat.

Carry On Champion has been reportedly working lights out and if he could finally put it all together could swoop to the front of this prestigious race.  As you would expect, this field is loaded with speed and it may setup perfectly for this gelded son of Storm Cat to absolutely fly down the stretch.  He has shown improving form in every race and the four furlong distance should fit him nicely.
